Airbnb Boomers suffer overtime loss to Finland

The Airbnb Australian Boomers came from a double digit deficit in the final quarter to force overtime against Finland, but would fall 87-81 in Helsinki overnight.

In a brilliant comeback from the Airbnb Boomers, the team overturned an 11-point margin with 3:13 remaining courtesy of a 12-1 run to close out regulation and force overtime.

The extra period went the way of the hosts from the outset, outscoring the Australians 15-9 to run out six-point victors and see the Airbnb Boomers slip to 2-2 after four games of their pre-FIBA Basketball World Cup tour.

Aron Baynes was the star for the Australians, posting arguably his best offensive game in the green and gold, finishing with a game-high 22 points on a remarkable 10-of-11 shooting to go with 11 rebounds in 25 minutes.

The San Antonio Spurs NBA Champion found support in the form of Brock Motum (12 points on 6-of-8 FG and four reounds), Joe Ingles (10 points and four assists) and Dante Exum (10 points).

It was the Airbnb Boomers who started brightly, quickly jumping to a 9-2 lead as Baynes and Exum looked in good early touch.

Eager to impress their home fans, Finland rallied on the back of an 11-6 run to cut the Australian lead to just one point at 17-16 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was all Finland, restricting the Airbnb Boomers to just 11 points, while piling on 23 of their own to hold a comfortable 39-28 advantage at half time.

After the break a rollercoaster third quarter ensued, with the Airbnb Boomers cutting the lead to six points early on, before the hosts rallied to push the margin back out to 14 points in the shadows of three quarter time.

This advantage quickly evaporated as the Australians went on a 10-2 run to close out the quarter and give them hope a repeat of their 100-95 come-from-behind win in Lithuania just four days earlier.

Next stop for the Airbnb Boomers is the south coast of France for a three-game tournament in the seaside city of Nice, where they will take on Ukraine, The Philippines and France.

In a coup for fans, all three games will be televised LIVE on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com.au, starting in the early hours of Saturday morning 16 August against Ukraine at 2:00am AEST.
