Airbnb Boomers Team named for 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup

Basketball Australia is pleased to announce the Airbnb Australian Boomers Team to compete at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

The final 12 has a distinct NBA flavour with San Antonio Spurs NBA Champion Aron Baynes among a host of stars looking to take the Boomers to their first medal at a major tournament.

Joining Baynes is Utah Jazz top five NBA draft pick Dante Exum, along with Cleveland Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova and Chicago Bulls forward Cameron Bairstow.

Three-time Olympian and Airbnb Boomers stalwart David Andersen will go around for his fifth major international tournament in the green and gold, leading a strong contingent of experienced leaders, including Joe Ingles, Adam Gibson and Brad Newley.

The quartet bring eight Olympic Games and five World Cups worth of experience to a young and exciting squad that has six players making their major tournament debuts for the Airbnb Boomers.

Star of the 2014 Sino-Australia Challenge Brock Motum joins Bairstow and Exum as debutants, along with sharp-shooting guard Chris Goulding, European-based Ryan Broekhoff, and centre Nathan Jawai.

Airbnb Boomers Head Coach Andrej Lemanis said the challenge of reducing 17 into 12 was made all the more difficult because of the performance of the players in camp.

“The selection process has been vigorous and thorough,” Lemanis said.

“The really positive news for Australian basketball is that we have a depth of talent available now – which certainly made final selection challenging.

“The team would like to thank the five players who missed selection for their contribution – all are wonderful people and tremendous basketball players.

“I have always said that difficult decisions would need to be made, and it was very tough as a staff to settle on the final squad, which is tremendous credit to all who competed at the camp.

“I would also like to thank the players who participated in the Sino Challenge for the contribution they have made to our World Cup campaign – everybody plays their part.”

With his final 12 selected, focus now turns to the Airbnb Boomers European preparation for Lemanis.

“Now that we have settled on a team, I look forward to building together over the next month,” Lemanis said.

“We all know there is plenty to be done to achieve the result we all desire. We also know we have the people, chemistry and talent to attack the challenge ahead with confidence.”

The team will depart for Europe on Tuesday 5 August, beginning their nine-game pre-FIBA Basketball World Cup tour in Lithuania, where they will face their Group D rivals along with Finland and Ukraine.

This will be followed by a one-game stay in Helsinki to take on Finland in front of their home crowd, before travelling to the south of France for games against the French, Ukraine and The Philippines in Nice.

Rounding out the Airbnb Boomers preparation will be two games in Strasbourg near the French-German border, with fixtures against Finland and France prior to arriving in the Canary Islands.

The Airbnb Boomers open their 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Gran Canaria against Slovenia in the early hours of Sunday morning 31 August AEST.

Based in the Canary Island city of Gran Canaria, the Boomers will also face Angola, Korea, Lithuania and Mexico, playing five games in six days prior to the knockout phase.
