Emerging Boomers Talent Ready for Stankovic Cup

The Australian Men’s Team destined for the 2013 World University Games (WUG) arrived in China on Wednesday ahead of the 2013 Stankovic Continental Cup eager to add to Australia’s already impressive medal collection at the tournament.

Sporting a squad of emerging Boomers talent, including rising stars Cameron Bairstow, Ryan Broekhoff and Igor Hadziomerovic, Head Coach Andrej Lemanis has assembled an exciting team that will provide a look into the bright future of the men’s national team program.

Australia boasts a long association with the Stankovic Cup since 2005, claiming the bronze medal at the first event, before going on to win medals at four of the past five tournaments – including gold in 2009 and silver in 2012.

This year’s tournament will see the Australians play five games in six days, tipping off tonight against Argentina before games in consecutive days against China, Puerto Rico and Germany.

A rest day follows before closing out the tournament on Tuesday against Nigeria and heading Russia ahead of their opening WUG fixture against the Czech Republic on July 7.

The likes of Bairstow, Hadziomerovic, Jason Cadee, Andrija Dumovic, Cody Ellis, Clint Stiendl, Mitch Young, Mitch Norton and Owen Odigie have worked with the Boomers Head Coach during the recent Sino-Australia Challenge against China.

The tournament – named after long-time FIBA General Secretary Borislav Stankovic – brings together teams from all over the world in senior competition.
