Australian women's draw for inaugural 3x3 world champs announced

The Australian women's 3x3 team have been drawn to play in Group A along with Brazil, Ukraine, Estonia, Mexico and Chinese Taipei at the inaugural world titles.

The Australian women’s 3x3 team for the inaugural FIBA 3x3 World Championship in Athens, Greece has been drawn to play in Group A along with Brazil, Ukraine, Estonia, Mexico and Chinese Taipei.

The draw for the first-ever 3x3 world title event, which will take place from 26 to 29 August in downtown Athens' Zapion Park, was conducted overnight and Australia was one of 24 invited teams that were grouped into four pools of six.

During the four day tournament each team will face the five others in their respective group, with the top four teams progressing to the Eighth Finals of a standard knock-out round.

WNBL rising stars Tess Madgen (SA), Katie-Rae Ebzery (NSW), Sara Blicavs (VIC) and Alice Kunek (VIC) have previously been selected to compete at the event and will be coached by Rebecca Dick from Tasmania.

The FIBA 3x3 World Championships also include individual skills challenges for participating players as well as numerous side-events and entertainment for attending fans.

The Australian team will assemble in Canberra on Sunday 19 August to take part in a training camp and play a game against the AIS with the support of Kristy Flores, who has experience having been the Australian coach at the Singapore Youth Olympics in 2010. The team will then depart for Athens on 20 August.

Meanwhile, the second edition of the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championship will be held in Alcobendas-Madrid, Spain from 28 to 30 September (moved from its original location of Seville).

The draw for the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championship will be held in Madrid during the FIBA 3x3 World Tour, to be played on 7-8 September.
