27.02.10

An action packed day in Gawler, and sensational end to the Championships.

GOLD MEDAL MATCHES

VIC METRO IB (W) – 67 def NSW METRO IB (W) – 36

Top Scorers:
VIC
Vanessa Ainger -23
Mina Aldobasic -22
NSW
Nicole Harris -13
Erica Demello -9

First half nerves affected both teams in the gold medal game.  Vic Metro found their range in the second half and pulled away.  Congratulations to both teams for the good sportsmanship in which the game was played.  Great to watch!

VIC METRO IB (M) – 88 def VIC COUNTRY IB (M) – 66

Top Scorers:
VIC METRO
Jamie Phillips -21
Nicholas Hum -17
VIC COUNTRY
Clinton Jee – 24
Matthew Tuddenham – 13

It was a high standard IB game.  The scoreboard did not reflect the closeness of the play.  The match was played in a good spirit.  The great teamwork of the Vic Metro tea, finally wore country down.

SA U20 (W) – 77 def VIC U20 (W) – 50

Top Scorers:
SA
Georgia Minear -12
Kelsey Ireland – 12
VIC
Alice Kunek – 10
Cortney Wiliamson – 9

The first half was a repeat of their minor round meeting.  After a nervous start by both teams, SA increased their intensity, serving up an impenetrable defence to the Victorians.  On the few occasions Victoria managed to put up a shot, they just could not find the basket.  The story continued in the second half.  Although Victoria could not bridge the gap, they were able to keep the scoring level.  It was only in the last few minutes of the game that SA broke away and proved that they truly are U20 Australian Women’s Champions.

VIC U20 (M) – 79 def SA U20 (M) – 76

Top Scorers:
SA
Tom Daly -25
Corey Maynard -11
VIC
Joshua Wilcher - 33
Mitchell Creek - 16

A fitting finish to a wonderful week of the U20 Men’s competition.  Vic hit the front for the first time in the game with 1:16 left on the clock, and managed to keep the SA boys out.  SA came out firing, hitting magnificent 3’s from all over the court and playing tight defence.  The Vics gradually pegged it back and kept believing in themselves.  A cool head from Mitchell Creek won the game for them.  Sensational end to a first class game.

Please note incorrect leading scorers for IB Vic Metro Womens Gold Medal match - should read Molly Urquhart-Moran 23 rather than Vanessa Ainger who plays for NSW M
