Jayco Opals take Gm 1 of The Farewell Series against Brazil
The Jayco Australian Opals have turned a six-point first-half deficit into a big 21 point win against Brazil in the opening clash of The Farewell Series at Hisense Arena this afternoon, running away with the 85-64 victory - VIDEO.
For the Brazilians, Iziane Marques finished with 26 points to lead all scorers for the game. Damiris Do Amaral added 13 points.
The Jayco Opals started tentatively, with four costly turnovers in the first three minutes of the game, Brazil a little more settled taking an early 4-0 lead.
A Kristi Harrower drive and bucket settled the Aussies down and put them on the board, as Suzy Batkovic started to exert her strength on the glass, while proving that she can match it with the guards, running the floor and distributing as well.
After a low-scoring first five minutes, the teams traded blows with Iziane Marques giving Brazil a 6-4 lead before Bishop scored in the post to tie things up again.
Level at 11-11 with 3:26 to play, a pair of Belinda Snell free-throws gave the Aussies the lead. It was short lived as a late bucket by Do Amaral seeing the Brazilians taking a slender 16-14 lead into quarter time.
Da Costa and Marques combined and saw the Brazilians snatch back the lead, as Brazil started to gain control of the contest.
A three-pointer by Da Costa right on the buzzer gave the visitors a six-point lead going into the change rooms.
Brazil came out and continued their aggression early in the contest, extending to an 11-point lead before the Jayco Opals ignited a massive run, scoring 11 straight points to draw level.
The Aussie assault on the basket saw them get points on the board and get to the foul line, the likes of Liz Cambage, Jenna O’Hea and Belinda Snell getting in on the action. The Aussies outscored Brazil by 14 points in the third, to take an eight-point lead into the last quarter.
They continued to extend the lead in the last quarter and shared the scoring load across the squad, with Batkovic, Snell, Bishop and O’Hea all getting in on the action as the Jayco Opals ran away with Game 1, and look ahead to Bendigo, where they will play Game 2 of the series.
