Boomers too good for Greeks
The Boomers have cruised past Greece to a 40-point win in Game Two of The Farewell Series.
The Australian Boomers men’s national basketball team have scored a rollicking 40-point victory over a young Greece team, 91-51, in Game Two of The Farewell Series at the new State Basketball Centre in Melbourne before a sell-out crowd of 3,200.
European-based Australian Joe Ingles led the Boomers with a game-high 17 points, while Gold Coast Blaze star Mark Worthington added 15 before hobbling from the court late in the game after suffering what appeared to be a knock to the groin region.
Former Townsville Crocodiles star Brad Newley added 13 points.
Nikolaos Pappas led the Greeks with 10 points but no other player from the Europeans reached double-figures.
The Boomers opened The Farewell Series with a strong 87-60 victory in Game One on Sunday night and started well in the rematch.
Australia reeled off a 12-0 run to start the match before the Greeks finally scored their first bucket with 5:28 left in the period. Greece steadied, but still trailed 25-9 at the first change. Ingles had 10 points in the opening stanza alone to drive the Boomers offence.
The second period saw Greece close within eight points on a triple from Michail Giannakidis with 4:10 remaining in the half, Australia leading 32-24, before the Boomers went on a 13-0 tear to regain the momentum. At the half, Australia’s lead was 19 points, 45-26.
Greece were more competitive in the third period, but still couldn’t make any inroads into the margin. Following a massive Aleks Maric alley-oop over his Greek counterpart in the closing seconds, Australia still led 62-40 at the final change and were in total control.
Australia outscored the visitors 29-11 in the final quarter to run away winners to the delight of the capacity crowd.
Both teams will now enjoy a rest day before squaring off in the third and final game of The Farewell Series at an already sold-out Geelong Arena on Wednesday night.
