Turnovers cost Boomers: Mills

30.07.12

Patty Mills says the Boomers simply made too many turnovers against Brazil.

Australian Boomers guard Patty Mills says his team must take care of the ball better than they did in their opening London match against Brazil if they hope to rebound with a win against world number two Spain on Tuesday night Australian time.

The Boomers committed 19 errors against the Brazilians in their narrow 75-71 loss to open their London campaign, and Mills says they were critical.

"The turnovers are what cost us. You take those off, you cut half of their points off and that's something where we're usually stronger with the ball," said Mills.
"We'll take that into the game against Spain."

Mills said he believed the Boomers could beat Spain and his team needed to get back to their core strengths of tough defence.

"It is a tough loss because you always want to get that first game. But you take all the positives out of this game and move on to Spain and we believe we can get them," Mills said.

"If we stick to what we do well - and that's the defensive pressure and running out of that - that's how we can beat teams.

"Playing uptempo is our strength - we get steals, we get deflections, we take them (opponents) out of what they want to do. Then we run out of that into transition."

Mills said the Boomers hoped their strong fitness would play a part in helping them emerge as a medal contender as the tournament progressed.

"We're feeling great. We pride ourselves on being the fittest team here and hopefully down the later ends of the week that fitness will all come through and we'll be running the same as we did in this game," he said.

Dellavedova is doing an excellent job but the Boomers shooting percentage is the real problem. Too much emphasis on Mills who is not good enough for that role - his shooting percentage proves that after 2 games. It is a team game and we need to get a team game happening out there.

All the players are very good, otherwise they won't make the Boomers 2012. It would be worth trying perhaps to mix slashers(e.g. Mills,Newley) & pure 3 pointers (e.g. Crawford,Barlow)to kick out the ball when it's needed. Also, if any of the starters is/are not playing well, maybe it's worth to gamble bringing in more bench players because you never know who would make the spark in the game. Is the strategy so much focused on defence that eventually makes the team so tired? Boomers played very well in the 1st half of the last two games but fell well behind in the 3rd quarter making it too difficult to catch up.

Dellavedova is an awesome PG. Way better than Gibson, so that's a ridiculous statement.
Barlow receiving a DNP - Coaches decision, is even more ridiculous. Arguably the best defender in the team in addition to the below mention attributes he brings...
Whilst Ingles can score in patches, he turns the ball over too much and makes stupid decissions...
Brett Brown please explain?

You guys are all crazy. Della smashes Gibbo. His college team plays at one of the fastest paces in the country. If you think he was the problem you have no clue. There is only one or two people on that team that can create there own shot. So Millls has to force shots cause the rest of the team have no clue on how to score. Non of them can shoot except Millls and Anderson. Going to be a long Olympics. Hopefully they can rally.

I'd also like to know why David Barlow did not see court time. The guy can flat out drill 3s, and when David Anderson is the only one hitting 3s for the Boomers you know there is something wrong!

Delly had 1 turnover in 28minutes of play and was the primary ball handler whenever he was in, seriously were we watching the same game?

Ingles had 6 turnovers, Baynes had 4, Mills and Nielsen both had 3 and you picked out Dellavedova to blame?

Yeah I agree, it was the first time I had seen Della play, and even an experienced Adam Gibson would have been better carrying the ball than Della, he's to young for such and inexperienced for this level, Barlow and Gibson are not.

who are ball carriers for the team della is too slow in passing the ball, where not at St Mary's where they all play slow the game down, this a National australian Basketball team, barlow should be on the court not della.

I would like to know why David Barlow wasn't on the court. Barlow's 3 point ability, size and ball handling skills were missed. The extra rebounding would have taken the stress of Maric, Andersen and Neilsen.

Brett Brown please explain?
