London: Spain too good for Boomers + VIDEO

31.07.12

The Boomers late rally fell short against Spain at the London Olympic Games.

BOXSCORE

The Australian Boomers fought hard and reeled in a big margin, but world number two Spain were too good, winning their Group B match at the London Olympic Games, 82-70.

Australia struggled to find the basket for a large stretch of the third period and couldn’t quite match the offensive power of a Spanish team loaded with NBA stars.

Joe Ingles led the Boomers with 12 point, six rebounds and three assists. Patty Mills added 11 points despite early foul trouble. Aron Baynes also had eight points and five rebounds.

LA Lakers star Pau Gasol led the Spaniards with 20 points, while Rudy Fernandez added 17 points and six rebounds.

The Boomers struggled for the second straight game to land shots from outside, going just 4-of-22 from the perimeter.  They also failed to get to the freethow line regularly, managing just six attempts for the game.

The Boomers started strongly and led 19-14 at the first break as they had six players score in an even effort.

Spain outscored the Boomers 23-13 in the second, but Australia were well and truly still in the game at the half, down 37-32.

Spain ran riot in the third quarter however as Pau Gasol’s brother Marc sparked a surge that saw the Spaniards outscore the Aussies 26-10.

The deficit looked set to blowout even further in the final period before Australia mounted a spirited comeback to pull within ten points with two minutes to play.

Time ran out for the Australians however and Spain improved to 2-0 while the Boomers fell to 0-2.

Australia have a day to recover before facing China on Thursday evening Australian time. They must now win two of their three remaining games to advance to the quarter finals.

David Barlow is the key! If that bloke shot 10 three pointers, guaranteed he would nail 9! Boom, boomers win!

Looks like there is a curse on BA, let's call it the BB curse. When coaches of the Boomers have the initials BB, they play a rehearsed predictable brand of small ball with unathletic players at the 3 and 4 positions, corresponding with a reluctance to play 2 big men they regard strictly as 5's and include veterans whose utility has passed. This curse consistently dooms the team while the cure is either on the bench or back home (dwight/jawai). We have a massive frontline and should not be outrebounded so significantly by Spain, or other euro teams and the responsibility lies on the coaching staff.

I think it was a good outcome against the number 2 team in the world. A lesser margin than Spains win over China should see us through. Imagine what will happen when the shooting touch comes back !

Third quarter fade out again. As much as I like our point guards when they are "on", their decision making in the third quarter was pretty poor with bad shot selections and really short offensive sets. C'mon Boomers - turn it around.

Seem like Australia were missing point blank opportinities down in the paint zone. Australia Basketball programs have also gone the same way, you don't even know whats is happening with Australia Basketball sometime.

There appeared to be some technical issues with stadium. It appeared that at our end the hoop was either too small for the ball to fit through or the basket was too far away from the ball after we took a shot. These things need to be picked up in the test competitions before the games.

I love basketball and the boomers but I am ashamed of the Australian basketball programs. We just cant put together a complete game of basketball. Worse for South East Queensland fans cause we dont even have a NBL team.
