Basketball Australia statement on Toowoomba Mountaineers tragedy
Basketball Australia has expressed its condolences for the loss of two Toowoomba basketball players.
Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Kristina Keneally and Chair of the BA Board Scott Derwin have expressed BA’s sympathy following the tragic deaths of Queensland basketballers Stacey Richter and Stephanie Mylonas yesterday afternoon.
The pair, who played for the Toowoomba Mountaineers, were travelling back from their team’s final game of the Queensland Basketball League season yesterday in Bundaberg when the car they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision on the Burnett Highway at Booubyjan.
“We were deeply saddened to learn overnight of the passing of Stacey Richter and Stephanie Mylonas of the Toowoomba Mountaineers women's basketball team in a tragic traffic accident,” Ms Keneally said.
"Both girls were not only outstanding players, but committed contributors to the wider basketball community."
“Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time," Mr Derwin said.
“This sort of tragedy has been felt by all members of the basketball family, as evidenced by the flood of tributes the two girls have received. They will be missed but not forgotten.”
