Australian women start 3-0 at 3X3 World Championship
Australia's women's 3X3 team has made a perfect 3-0 start to their World Championship campaign.
The Australian women’s team at the inaugural FIBA 3X3 World Championships in Greece have swept all three matches in the first day’s play.
Australia almost completely shut-out a mismatched team from Mexico, 21-2, before two hard fought wins against Chinese Taipei (16-14) and Ukraine (20-16).
The three wins sees the Australian team - made up of Alice Kunek, Katie Ebzery, Tess Madgen and Sara Blicavs – on top of Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record.
Australian Coach Rebecca Dick was pleased with the early results.
“(Against Mexico), we used our size advantage and the game was a good opportunity for the girls to get a feel for the 3X3 (game),” Dick said. “Against Chinese Taipei, the game was a real grind with them making us earn every basket. The match against Ukraine was a danger game for us with Ukraine having a significant size advantage but the girls were focused on D and offensively all were assertive and some timely steals earned us the win.”
Australia next plays Brazil (1-2) on 24 August before their final round game against Estonia (2-1) on 25 August. Play offs commence on 25 August with finals on 26 August.
