Mills, Ingles headline Boomers team for FIBA Oceania
The Australian Boomers have named a star-studded team to face New Zealand for the 2013 FIBA Oceania Championships, headlined by London Olympic stars Patty Mills and Joe Ingles.
A squad of 12 has been named for the two-game series, tipping off on Wednesday 14 August, with Mills and Ingles among six Olympians (David Andersen, David Barlow, Matthew Dellavedova and Adam Gibson) to suit up against the Tall Blacks.
Exciting teenage duo Dante Exum and Ben Simmons will be given their first taste of senior international basketball, with Boomers Head Coach Andrej Lemanis naming the talented young pair after impressing in camp.
Exum, 18, and Simmons, 17, add to an exciting young core of Boomers looking to drive the men’s program in this Olympic cycle and beyond.
Lemanis said the time in camp has benefited the team as they look towards the challenge of New Zealand.
“This is a good opportunity for us to start to grow together as a group, to establish a style of play and establish who we are going to be on the international stage over the next four years,” Lemanis said.
“We’ve got a good mix of veterans and youth in the group. In that we have establish players who will look to provide experience and leadership, and the younger players who are trying to establish themselves in the Boomers program.
“It’s a great training camp for the team and they’ve certainly grown as a group in the days we’ve had together and it’ll be a good challenge for us to go and take on New Zealand.”
The Boomers will be without NBA-based Aron Baynes (hamstring) and Sydney Kings marquee signing AJ Ogilvy (groin) ruled out by injury, opening the door for Adelaide 36ers forward Anthony Petrie and World University Games (WUG) star Cameron Baristow.
Fellow WUG silver medallist Ryan Broekhoff comes into the Boomers team and centre Luke Nevill will get a chance to build on his impressive performances from the Sino-Australia Challenge against China.
The 2013 FIBA Oceania Championships will see the Australian Boomers take on the New Zealand Tall Blacks in a two-game series, with Game One on Wednesday 14 August in Auckland.
Game Two will take place on Sunday 18 August at the AIS Arena in Canberra, with the Boomers and Jayco Australian Opals in action.
