In 2010 after several training camps the final 12-strong team to contest the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship in Hamburg, Germany from July 2-11 was selected in May.
For the World Championship Australia has been drawn alongside 2009 U16 European Champion Spain, Canada (3rd at 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship), Korea (2nd at 2009 FIBA Asia U16 Championship), Poland (4th at 2009 FIBA U16 European Championship) and hosts Germany (11th at 2009 FIBA U16 European Championship) in Group B. Group A consists of Argentina, China, Egypt, Lithuania, Serbia and USA.

This age group classification was recently created by basketball's world governing body FIBA.
In 2009 the inaugural FIBA Oceania U17 Championship was held as a qualification tournament for the first world championship for the U17 age group - the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship.
