MVP Andersen stars in Turkish Cup Final

Aussie Boomers star David Andersen has helped Fenerbache to the Turkish Cup title, taking MVP honours in the 63-57 win over bitter rivals Galatasaray.

It was a vintage performance from the Boomers regular, amassing 21 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in the low-scoring affair to claim the game MVP and further endear himself to the fans of his new club.

Nathan Jawai has ensured FC Barcelona Regal retained the Copa del Ray title for the fourth consecutive year, helping the Catalan club to a 85-69 win over Valencia in the final in the early hours of Monday morning.

Jawai had 10 points and 4 rebounds in 16 mins as the FC Barcelona claimed their 23rd Copa del Ray title.

Fellow Aussie Brad Newley helped his high-flying Gran Canaria to the Semi Final stage of the eight-team tournament, scoring 16 points and adding 6 rebounds in the 83-72 loss to Valencia.

Andrew Bogut has been making progress since returning from micro-fracture surgery repairs for his left ankle. Bogut scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor on Tuesday against the Houston Rockets and pulled down 9 rebounds in 25 minutes.

The Boomers centre followed this performance up with 7 points and 6 rebounds in 28 minutes in the road loss to Memphis after sitting out the game against Oklahoma City. The Warriors are talking a careful line with Bogut, with the centre not playing back-to-back games until after the NBA All Star break.

After a brief two-game stint in the D-League Aron Baynes was back in a Spurs uniform as they embarked on a seven-game road trip. Baynes came off the bench for 11 minutes in the win over Minnesota, while teammate Patty Mills got 7 minutes in the loss to Detroit. Both played limited minutes in Monday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets.

It was a big weekend of college basketball for some of our next generation of Australian Boomers stars, led by Matthew Dellavedova.

Dellavedova put on a brilliant performance with a win against conference rival San Diego, in which the Gaels defeated the Toreros 74-64. The Senior scored 19 points, connecting on 7-of-16 field goal attempts, but his tremendous night came from behind the three-point line, draining 5 threes throughout the game. He also got his teammates involved as well, dishing out 7 assists in the process as the Gaels extended their winning streak to nine straight games.

Ryan Broekhoff had a wonderful game against Cleveland State, scoring 15 points from 5-of-11 shooting and draining three 3-pointers in the game in the 80-72 win over the Vikings. He also locked down the Vikings defensively, accumulating 4 steals and showing an excellent balance in his game.

Anthony Drmic scored 21 points and also pulled down 7 boards in Boise State’s 68-61 win versus Wyoming. Drmic played in all 40 minutes of this game to lead his team to victory over their conference rival. This win helped them bounce back after a devastating one-point loss to San Diego State on Wednesday.

While Brock Motum did score 17 points against UCLA Saturday night, it wasn’t enough to pull his team over the hump, losing 76-62. He shot a moderate 6-of-15 from the floor and connected on two 3-point shots in the game. It was a tough road trip for the Cougars after going down to USC on Friday (AEDT).
